rebuild - startup tips?Way to go!!!
On the oil leak - Did you re-torque after it sat overnight? It really shouldn't leak from the head gasket unless the head or cylinder block weren't flat, or the o-rings weren't installed with the head gasket. Shop manual says 13.74 to 16.63 ft-lbs. I go 15 (180 in-lbs) with the threads lubricated with motor oil, then 190 or so the morning after. If you think the head nuts may not be tight enough, I think you can get to all of them with a little imagination without dropping the engine. On the plus side, at least you know you're getting oil to the head! And congratulations on a successful fire! Thanks. Turned to 15 last night, then again this morning, checked again to 15 before install.
Put in the o rings with a little black sealant. LM checked the spec on the cylinder and head, so it's correct. Funny thing is that I just checked again, and they were more like 13-14. Maybe it loosened up when it started? I tried to tighten them up and I can reach all but the inside left top when standing at the front of the bike looking aft. I have been reading posts saying to go to 20 or even 22. Going to see how this works and then drop and go to 22 if the leak doesn't stop. Go more than 20 at your own risk... Did you lube the threads? If not, more of the torque goes to overcoming friction in the threads, and not to tension in the studs. Tension in the Studs, that was a band in the seventies wasn't it??? Anyway... sounds like you did everything right and if it drips a little oil, well, why should you be different that the rest of us?
