racing 305

I need an explanation of why my 305 motor starts right up but is racing at about 4000 rpm and won't idle.

1 throttle slides look all the way down
2 throttle adjustment screws slacked off
3 mixture screws 1 1/2 turns out
4 floats adjusted for 26 mm carb bodies
5 needles seem fine
6 tried retarding spark - still races

So W_T_F?? anyone want to weight in. bike is so close to being all done up. want to ride b 4 snow here in Mass. Thank you for any words, kind or unkind (like I'm a dope!)

I would think that the slides aren't bottomed all the way. Is there play in the throttle? Did you sync the slides so they raise at exactly the same time? Slides are in the proper carbs? There is a left and right slide, cutout should face air filter.

does this bike have two carbs?? you keep saying screws, slides etc...?

i would also agree its not bottoming out. If perhaps you have a bike that has two carbs, then i would bet the slides are in backwards in the wrong carb. Ive seen people do this a lot. Where someone takes both carbs apart to clean them and since the slides are mirror opposites they install the left slide in the right carb and the slide cut out is backward. causing the engine to rev.

just a thought.
