headlight replace or retrofit?

Post by brainblood » Sun Nov 18, 2012 3:58 am

i've found used headlights for $50 - $100 on ebay...i also saw new halogen lights for $100...i've heard the headlight can be retrofitted with a halogen bulb, like a H4, which costs around $10...got any ideas?

Most US Dream Headlights are 'sealed beam' which means that the bulb is part of the reflector. Fitting a halogen bulb means cutting the old bulb out and epoxying the new bulb in to the hole.

If you are handy with tools you can save yourself $90. You have to get the replacement bulb lined up properly so that it is in the correct place and orientation in the reflector.

Once you have done that you are all set.

In Europe we are luckier as we had dream headlamps with replaceable bulbs.

Note the original headlight is part of the electrical system that was designed for a 35W bulb. I think the halogens are twice that and may drain the battery a little. Maybe others that have done this can comment.

Not sure which bike you have, but I did this conversion on my CB77 a few years back, and I very much prefer it.

As far as the wattage of the H4's goes, you can get 35/35 bulbs from Scooterworks in Chicago.

If you're talking about a Dream, I got the replacement setup from Charlie's Place in San Francisco. It has a replaceable halogen bulb, and seems just fine. I guess if you can cut glass, you can make your own...but this worked for me.
