Tried calling a sec ago and was told you were setting up a gun show! That sounds like fun. I'll try you back in a bit.

Just talked to Ed and he knew the problem. The cam is off a tooth or two. I'll get on that asap and let you guys know what happens. Can't wait to really ride this bike!

Reset the cam chain and she runs great! I can see why Ed says to use vice grips on cam, it really helps. What happened was the cam tried to push forward causing me to think it was aligned but when I put the tensioner back in, the points don't align.

Ok, I may have spoke too soon. It runs, but still has no power. My friend test rode it after I put the motor back in and he said it felt good, but when I rode it today, it has the same stuttering and popping if you try to rev it. To me it feels like intermittent spark failure. There is no back firing.

When I built the motor, I check to make sure the valves sealed by turning the head upside down and filling the combustion chamber with wd40. It didn't leak out after 2 hours so I'm assuming that's ok.

Other things a friend told me was to run 87 fuel and colder plugs as that was what made his Dream 160 run right without baffles. I'm already running 8 plugs, and I don't know if there are any colder plugs than that.

Opinions are welcome...

???
Hi,

Cam timing off one tooth ?

Jensen
Why didn't you check it when I was asking ?

I suggest to spend some time to do the basic checks first before jumping to conclusions in all kind of directions. Analyse the problem en start with the basics.

A few simple starting points :

cam a tooth off ?, maybe two ? re-check it ! How can a cam being two tooth off and you didn't see it with a final check ? Check your work again and again.

Check your ignition, meaning points, condenser, wiring, spark plug caps (are they new ?), high voltage cables, etc. etc. Don't think it's ok, make sure it's ok.

This problem does exist a year now, time to solve it.

Jenson, I did check it when you said. Thats when I was told it was wrong and I pulled the motor to correct it. As far as the length of time I've been working on this project, I just finished this bike a week or two ago, so I've not been at this a year. I do appreciate your suggestion about the cam tooth and I look forward to other suggestions that will lead me in the right direction.

Oh, and yes. New caps, new wires, new plugs, clean points, new wiring, new battery, coils from a running bike and a condenser from the same bike.....

Check both sides for spark even at high rpm and they both seem to be firing but the left side seems to be intermittent. I will change the condenser tomorrow and see if that changes anything. Like I said, that's what it seems like to me is intermittent spark. Also the left points spark a bit...
