Fresh motor rebuild not running correctly.

Post by 56_oval » Thu Sep 06, 2012 5:45 pm

Ok guys, hopefully y'all can help me out here. I just rebuilt the superhawk motor with fresh seals and gaskets, new kenig pistons and NOS rings. I'm currently running velocity stacks with megaphone exhaust without baffles.
Basically she runs ok standing still except a little stutter off idle to around 3k, but stutters a lot when you put a load on the motor. It spits and sputters and there is NO power. The superhawk I sold recently had tons more power and it was stock which leads me to believe I need some baffles.
Any help you guys can give me would be great.

Well it takes a few basic things to make an internal combustion engine to run correctly.

First you need compression
Then you need fuel and the correct amount
Then you need ignition
All of these things need to come together at the right time (timing both valve and ignition)

So assuming you have the cam timed corretly I would first make sure you have the points gapped correctly and they are making good contact (clean) then time them correctly. Check spark plugs make sure no cracks. If all is correct I would look at the carbs making sure the jets are clean and the correct size or at least close. Can you tell if it is both cylinders acting up? Or just one and if so which one? I doubt the lack of baffles is the real culprit ( I dont recommend leaving them out).

The Bill Silvers tune up guide is an awesome tool.

I would go back check the basics like mentioned above if you are still having trouble there are some people on here that will have the answers but I think they may need a little more to go on to help if the basics dont do it.

Good luck

Jon

I appreciate your response, but I've checked all the normal stuff. I understand engines, I'm just seeing if theres something I need to know that is specific to these motors. I'm wondering about the baffles mainly and I'm gonna stick some in there tomorrow to see if that helps.

'm pretty sure it's right, but I could be wrong. I'll try and take some video and see if you can hear it.

Ok, so I put in 160 mains and upped the pilots a bit. Starts up beautifully and revs great (better than before), but when I try and ride it, there's no power and she spits and sputters with a load. I'm lucky to get her up to 40mph. I'm gonna try the baffles in a bit.

What would she sound like if the cam chain was off one tooth?
