CL77 Fuel Tank questions.....

Post by jbunceiii » Sun Sep 02, 2012 12:36 pm

My basement find CL77 fuel tank is pretty bad, lots of rust and other issues, small holes, etc. I have cleaned it pretty good but I just think I should bite the bullet and try and find another one.

So the question is....Will other tanks fit on my frame, a CA, CB, etc.

And if not, any sources for either new or used tanks. I have been looking on the forums and google. I may just post a Wanted thread and see what I can find that way.

Thanks

I see these tanks show up on ebay regularly and I've seen a few for sale at swap meets.

Don't give up on your tank just yet. If you can clean it well inside, put tape over the small holes and then line the tank with Caswell's sealer. It's a phenolic epoxy that can handle ethanol laced fuels. I had an S90, original paint tank that had pinholes in the bottom along the seam. I did the tape and sealer trick and the tank is solid as a rock. I must admit I left a bit too much sealer in the tank when I set it down to harden. I'll bet the thickness on the bottom is about 3/8". But who cares. You don't tour with an S90 or CL77 and a thick bottom is a robust bottom. That applies in several categories in life.

Google Caswell Plating and you will find their tank sealer there. Do it on a warm day because the stuff is very viscous. I did it in the basement in the winter which contributed to my thick bottom.

regards,
Rob

I actually filled it with nuts/bolts and wrapped it in towels and blankets then put it in my dryer for 30 minutes. It loosened up a lot of rust and such. The tank seems very thin walled as compared to other modern gas tanks. I will probably do that one more time.

I did google some fuel tank repair shops, they want around $350 to repair the tank.

I think I may try your method and see if that works out for me. Thanks for your help....

J, I have this for sale. Might take some work. No serious dents. Scram64
P.S. I can also help with the harness at your battery. Scram64
