Oil Filter/Thrust washer Lesson Learned

I wanted to share with you guys my experience in the last few days and learning how important the thrust washer is to the oil filter's function. I decided to give my 1966 CB77 an oil change for the first time. I pried the filter cover off and the whole assembly came with it becuase the shaft was stuck in the cover. I think that is somewhat common but I also noticed I was missing the thrust washer next to the pin. The filter cap was also stuck on the filter rotor and I mean STUCK. The shaft pin broke in half when trying to get the shaft off of the outer cover so I just ordered an entire filter assembly off of ebay. I still can't get the cap off the old one even after resorting to a rachet extension and a BFH! My new one is in much better condition and the cap came right off with light tapping from the inside.

After taking the case cover off to have easier access to the filter I noticed the sprocket on the main shaft that rotates the oil filter was spinning on its own, so who knows how long this bike has been running without the oil being filtered!

After further inspection I realized this all goes back to that missing thrust washer! The pin had made a nice gouge in the filter cap (not the cover) locking it to the shaft, makeing it so the filter couldn't spin at all. I assume this is what caused the sprocket to loosen up to allow the main shaft to spin normally while the oil filter was held in place by the pin. All this could have been prevented if someone had not forgotten to put that freakin' thrust washer in! (Or in the correct place.)

I hope tightening the lock nut will lock the sprocket back to the shaft and everything will be ok... I'm a little worried this may have caused more damage than I can see at the moment.

Pay close attention to the tapered washer behind the oil filter drive sprocket/nut,as it only goes one direction. There is also a lock tab washer to engage the nut. Mine was assembled with the washer crooked and thus allowing the sprocket to freewheel.

When assembling the Oil filter cover pay close attention to the alignment pin that goes into the cover. This keep the OF shaft from rotating. More than likely someone forced it in with a BFH cause they didn't know any better.

I dare say there is alot of these out there which are botched in this area.

Thank you, I will be very cautious in putting it all back together. It's a high mileage bike but I want to keep it going for as long as I can. I came across a post about the correct assembly of the nut/washer/sprocket from LM so I will take it apart and make sure everything is going in right direction and in the right order before I close her up.
