I recently acquired a pretty nice 67 CL77, and I have a couple of carburetor questions. When I first got it, it idled poorly, and came away from a stop poorly, but once it was rolling 40+ it was OK. Then on a ride the other day, it started running very poorly. I was close to home, and when I rolled in I was able to determine (by pulling plug wires) that the right cylinder wasn't working. I dropped the carb bowl, and found the main jet and holder laying in the bottom of the bowl. The PO had reported that the carbs had recently been rebuilt by a local shop--in fact had a receipt to that effect. I guess they didn't get that part back in tight. I also found a pluged slow jet. Going back together, I checked to float height. I have literature with some conflicts, but more votes for 22.5mm float height than anything else. It was about 26mm when I took it apart. I set it at 22.5, and found that that made it so that the float was really close to the top of the chamber. I have a way to check the fuel level, and this put the level about even with the seam between bowl and body, which seems really high. I set it back to 25mm (whichi is what the Honda factory manual says) which put the fuel level about 3mm (1/8") or so below the bowl-to-body seam. So now I am confused--like I said the bulk of the literature that I have says 22.5mm, but that sure seems high. Does anyone have guidance/comments on this? Also--what are the correct stock jet sizes for this carb (marked 26 on the body, and 77 on the choke lever)? Thanks for any help.
