Left side not firing... I'm out of ideas...
Left side not firing... I'm out of ideas...I am hoping you guys will have a bit of advice for me:
Left side not firing. Exhaust: cold/cool compared to the right side I can pull the left spark plug boot off and bike still runs, no change in engine sound. Pulling the right side kills the engine, thus running on only the right side. Points are new, same volt reading at both points; ground at engine, positive at wire leading to coil. Left side spark plug black with soot. Plug wires clipped/shortened with new boots. Spark at left boot/plug when placed on engine block. I have flipped the coils and left side still does not fire New pistons and rings, valves set to proper clearance, points set to proper spacing, points plate set in correct position, using 12v light. Carbs rebuilt, float bowls set to correct height. All settings using Ed's tune up guide and using Mr. Honda's info as reference.
If that plug really is new, how do we explain the fact that it's all black and sooty? Soot indicates it is burning very rich and fouling the plug.
Replace that plug or swap them over and wee if it still runs on one side. Then check the carb on the dead side for low floats (flooding) poor needle and seat sealing, missing pilot jet etc.
I rebuilt the petcock and I am running clear fuel line and can see fuel flowing.
That is a very good point about the plug... Is it possible the side is firing at higher rpm's? One thing I did have to do to the points plate was grind the rotational adjustment holes so that I could turn the plate far enough to line up the 12v light lighting. I will be working on it today, I will double check the advice given. Thank you Clark
