How to replace shifter shaft...is there post on this? How to replace shifter shaft...is there post on this?I have to replace my shifter shaft. It broke off. I got the side cover off. Do I have to take everything off (oil pump, both chains, clutch, all gears, ect.) to do this? Do I need any special wrenches or tools? If there is a post on this... I would like to know. I have done a lot of searches, but can't come up with anything that actually helps. thanks
Re: How to replace shifter shaft...is there post on this? You don't tell us what engine ya have.
How good a mechanic are ya? You do not need to remove any cylinder parts. Remove the right side cover. Remove stater. Remove starter or starter blank off plate. (Scrambler) Remove the clutch cover and all parts in there other than the shift drum holder. (Pay attention to how the crank nut and parts are installed hoping they are correct) Remove all nuts/bolts on bottom and loosen the 2 under/behind the carbs and top them to the studs so ya can use a wood block and a large hammer/mallet to hit the wood and split the cases. Ya will need some HONDA BOND or YAMA BOND to seal the cases when ya are finished. Add your location to your profile. If ya don't understand my instructions I can give ya my number to call. .........lm
Danged if ya aren't right.
To early in the AM I guess. Thanks. ......lm
Opps...sorry, I am working on a 66 305cc Dream. Been setting up for 30yrs, checked the oil (looked descent), filed the points, got it to firing, cleaned up the carb (which wasn't bad at all), made a make shift gas tank, used a battery booster as a make shift battery, kicked it twice ,and dang, it cranked and ran like a top, although the mufflers are gone. Hope to restore completey...
The only special tool required would be to get the nut off of the crankshaft, but most of us just use a screwdriver and hammer. Be sure to note the order of assembly of the washers and sprockets on the crankshaft. There should also be a washer against the outside of the oil slinger (between the cover and pin).
