Questions Concerning the CA, CB & CL Motors

Post by bill440cars » Sun Mar 11, 2007 10:09 pm

First, let me say that I've got a 63' CB77 w/ a previous owner having put a CA77 motor in it. I've got a deal I'm trying to work out with a CB77 motor and just have to work out how much the shipping will be and hope I can afford the shipping charges. 2ndly, I'm curious just differences there are between the CA motor and the other 2 (CB/CL)? I know about the 360 vs the 180 degree crankshaft, the 1 carb vs 2 carbs, the single points setup vs the dual points, I think the coils are different (aren't they?), I know that the CA & CB have electric starters and the CL doesn't (I also have learned here that the CL crankshaft isn't drilled to provide oil to an electric starter clutch). Some things I don't know are: Is there a significant difference between the cams and the carbs of the CL vs the CB? Anything that anyone can add to the differences between the 3 motors would be greatly appreciated. On a pretty tight budget, I hope to get that CB77 motor for my 63' CB77. I also hope to get the parts needed to convert that CA motor to a CB, or at least a CL motor and I've got a CL77 Rolling chassis for that one.
Thanks for your time and what ever input that anyone can add.

Later on, Bill

The cams are the same other than the left side for the CB has the tach drive gear. Sell the CA and get a correct engine for your frame. ..............lm

Hey lm,
Thanks for the cam info, I knew about the tach drive part but wasn't sure if the CB cams might be a better grind. The CA motor is seized and I haven't seen much activity for these bikes or hardly any of the OLD Hondas (450s or SOHC4s/350F/400F/500K/550K & F/650/ or 750s). Shipping on that old might be kinda steep. Speaking of shipping, I gotta find out how much that CB motor would cost me to ship in. There might be someone who'd like to have the CA motor but, I have no clue about the internals. Outside looks pretty good though. Don't get me wrong lm, I do appreciate your input. Thing is, a person in my position (tight budget, lots of "Project Bikes" and located in Arkansas) doesn't help. Now, let me say this "Budget will fluctuate some, I'll try to get around to selling of (or trading off some of) my Project Bikes and I'm not leaving Arkansas". II figure that sometimes you do the best you can with what you've got. That CA motor that I'm wanting to convert to a CB/CL motor, will probably be going into a CL77 frame, but it's not going to look like a CL bike. You all take care.
