What year is this? What year is this?Hi all. Just new to the forum. I have just taken delivery of my latest project. 1966 CL77. Frame number is CL77-1018884. Is this a 1966?. I also have a 1967 model coming for resto number 2.
Where can I find a listing of serial numbers broken down by production year? And, does anyone have info on the differences between the 66 and 67 models. I know there were some changes and I want to make sure I get the parts correct. Thanks in advance for your help. I'm surprised somebody has not replied yet.
It does not work that way with these bikes. Leftovers were sold the next year as that year bikes. There were changes made in the middle of runs so you really cannot say that a given year is a given model. The parts books list the parts by VIN number so that is your best resource for accuracy. Of course updates sometimes cause some parts to get dropped for superseded parts. You can tell you date of manufacture by the date on the wiring harness code. My chrome fendered CL77 registered as a 1967 model year has a 1966 manuf date on the wiring harness. With a 101 number, I would expect your bike to be very early. The parts book will tell you if it should have small front brake, steel sliders, etc. which will help you narrow down a model of sorts. There are others here with more detailed knowledge of the serial numbers and what changed when. They can tell you if you have bitsa bike or an all original piece that just has a later registered model year. regards, Rob What year?Snake gives good guidance. Don't focus on the year. It was apparently acceptable back in the day to title a Honda motorcycle in the year it was sold and that was considered the "year" of the bike. Better to look at the parts manual to see which parts fit your bike by frame number.
Even then, you need to recognize that the Honda literature has no lack of misinformation. It is a good idea to check several parts manuals to confirm the part number and any superseded numbers. I have a '65 CL77 that I bought in the early 70"s It came with the later forks/sliders/front wheel. I assumed it was original from the factory, but turns out it was a bitsa bike, like Snake refers to. In the end, unless you are doing a concourse restoration, if you find parts that fit and do the job, you are set to ride. Post your questions here and you will usually get lots of answers. Hope this helps. Thanks for the info. It has the large brakes as I remember from my original 1966 I had when I was in high school. I will, for sure, get the parts manual.
Also,I just took delivery of bike #2 for another restoration. Frame #1054024. Engine 1054205. Advertised as a 1967. Has the big brakes the larger tail light, painted fenders. Question. Should that frame number come with a seamed gas tank? Thanks.
