Sounds to me like you have a loose tooth or something in the gearbox!

Could it be something being thrown around inside the case?

After pulling off the left crankcase cover I have a sneaking suspicion it's an oil filter chain with significant slack in it.

No. Unlike the starter chain, which does rub on the lower crankcase cover area, I don't see anywhere it has been rubbing. The two oil filter chains that I have are both equally sloppy so it's just gonna have to remain that way.

Intermittent noise

Post by conbs » Fri Mar 16, 2012 12:53 pm

LM, could the noise be pistons slap?

Kane being able to make it happen with light throttle at cruising speed makes me curious.

Tis possible to be several things.
All would require taking the engine apart.
Piston slap, worn small crank end, loose rivets at the cam sprocket.
Over loose valve adjustment.
May want to check the rotor bolt for tightness.
Adjust the cam chain.
Can be several things for sure. ..................lm

Don't rack your brains too hard, fellas, unless you want to come by and fix it. I'm chalking it up to the combined effects of 6 chains and 47 years of metal. If something grenades, I'll take a peek.
