Just to close this out - and I realise there are likely a lot of folks who already knew this, but as it was new to me I thought I'd share for others also on the learning curve.

The original end covers (53180-028-670) are not available to fit this style of lever:

But Honda does still sell end covers - the small one in the photo is 95010-16001. The large one below is the original part number and includes a built up end piece that fits onto the flat of the lever.

So I made a small half round for the end of the flat ended lever, and used the new, small cover - it went on with no problem at all using a bit of WD40 and looks good enough I think. I admit I was surprised at how much stretch there was in the new covers - the original ones must also have been equally as elastic when new, but now even if you can find them, have very little stretch at all making installation unlikely. As a result, the new covers are a viable option.
