Hi guys,
I'm stripping my frame and related parts on my '65 CL77 for powder coat.
I have a question regarding the Steering stem. I'm having trouble removing the lower bearing race so I can remove the seal and washer.
Does the shaft press into (Out of) the casting?
I haven't found a puller with arms long enough (And thin enough) to remove the race without disassembling the shaft from the casting.
The washer and seal are items 2 and 7 in the photo.
Also, any sources for a new seal while I have it apart?
Thanks,
Gary
CL77 Steering stem
Re: CL77 Steering stemI use a brass punch and tap it as I go from side to side and the race comes up as I do. .................lm
I've always been able to remove them by turning the steering stem upside down, placing in a vise for support, and tapping around the edges of the race with a hammer and steel drift. There are only about 3 spots where you have access, but if you work your way around several times carefully, it will come off, usually without any damage to the washer or seal. As I recall, Ohio Cycle has both the washer and seal. Possibly Western Hills as well. --Randall
