Why have I lose Center Stand bolts twice?

Post by akpasta » Mon Jan 09, 2012 1:19 pm

Just got a CB77, totally restored with only about 450 miles on. Running into this problem with the left-side center stand bolt. It backed out on me about one day after I got it, fell out while riding, gone.

Seller replaced it the next day. That one also backed out within a day, it was on tight too.

He's going to give me another one today and I've decided I'm just going to put up and off the center stand a dozen times or so in a row to see if something is causing friction or something. I understand it's a basic shoulder-bolt, so it seems with a washer or the proper spacing, it would be impossible for the stand to grind any threads, and for the functioning of the stand itself to somehow destroy the bolt itself. But, the folks at Charlie's Place have suggested that it does happen.

Anyone have any tips here? Is it just bad luck or is there something I should know about these stands? The right side one is holding tight btw. I think red loctite may figure into this third bolt :)[/i]

They were both shoulder bolts. The first was the real-deal cb77 one, the second was one off a different model. I think today he's gonna bring by another cb77 bolt.

The only other thing I could add is in both instances the stand didn't spring back up when you pushed it off. It would move forward, but then you'd have to push it up all the way. Not sure if that's normal, my 90 snaps up quick. So what's the mechanism that holds it tight enough to prevent back out, but not so tight that it interferes with the movement of the stand? Am I missing something here?

Also, what would happen if you used a regular bolt, with, say, a bit of play but with heavy loctite on the nut, so it would allow movement of the stand, but hold it in place?

You should have the special shoulder bolts on each side. After torquing the nuts, the stand should still pivot freely. The nuts should be additionaly secured with cotter pins through the holes in the ends of the shoulder bolts. Regards, Chase

The seller dropped off another shoulder bolt/nut to me, and I see the holes for cotter pins. Good idea.

Next question. Is the center stand supposed to snap up when you push the bike off the stand? Mine doesn't, it sorta sticks, and you have to push it up by hand.

My thought is the right-side nut (and the left when it was on there) are torquing down onto the frame/stand. And when you push the stand on and off it's loosening or perhaps tightening the bolt as well. Seems like there should be play of the shoulder bolt inside the holds in the frame/center stand. Is the nut supposed to hit the end of the threads before it reaches the frame or center stand? If so, then my shoulder area on the bolt isn't long enough, and I may have to mod the end of the bolt and possibly dremel some area off the inside of the head, so it goes through further. Thoughts?

Why have I lose Center Stand bolts twice?

Andy,

The length of the shoulder is critical. See pic #3. The shoulder sticks proud of the stand so it doesn't bind. In pic #2 top left is the optional longer bolt for the side stand. I am measuring a diameter of 13.90mm on the shoulder and a length of the shoulder at ~ 16.85mm. Check the bolt holes on your stand. Make sure you can put the bolt in and rotate it and make sure the shoulder is long enough to keep the bolt from pinching the stand into the frame. It's funny that the parts diagram doesn't show a cotter, but there is a hole in the end of the bolt and you should use one. I showed a photo which shows the lock washer, nut and cotter. The stand should snap up without binding. Hope this helps.
