Yamaha XS Coils for Honda 305 scrambler

Post by PapaWoody » Thu Sep 08, 2011 11:40 am

about a year and a half ago I pulled a 71 cb350 from behind a barn. I had to completely rebuild the motor and most of it's components got replaced. For coils I used a set of new yamaha xs coils with great success. I have an extra set and was wondering if they would work on this 305. Just wondering if anyone had a nay say with a reason off the top of their head. Thanks

Well I am building this cl 77 with no coils and I have this brand new set of coils from an xs sitting here with no bike. It worked with my Honda 350 so I thought maybe i would be in luck in which case I figured someone here would know

PapaWoody

Welcome to the forum!!

You mentioned 305 Scrambler in your subject. That means CL77 to most of us here.... :-)

Measure the primary resistance of your coils and if they are around 4-5 Ohms, they should be OK. If they worked on a CB350 that should be a good clue as well. Just have a go, see what happens and report back. We'll all learn something that way.

Typically if they are coils from a points ignition XS650 they should work fine. Coils have different resistance for points and or electronic iggys. I used an RD350 Yamaha coil on my Bridgestone 100 and it worked fine (and this was a 6V system)!
