Swapping liners

Post by djohns » Mon Jan 08, 2007 12:30 pm

My cylinder liners in an "early" CA77 are shot. Already bored to S3 and pitted beyond S4. I have purchased new S2 pistons and rings for the bike but have been held back by $400 for new liners installed. On Ebay I can get a used cylinder with fair liners installed. The S/N shows to be a "late" version with 32mm bolt spread on cam chain tensioner. What is practicality of swapping liners from late to early cylinder casting? I would hope the liner OD is the same, and they are not all custom fitted?

I've changed the sleeves many times.
Sleeves will swap no matter the year as long as they are the same CC when NOS. ..........lm

Thanks LM! Warmed the cylinder casting with the torch and one liner came out with a tap, rewarmed the other side and it slid out on its own. Casting bore looks clean after a little 3M pad cleaning. One liner lip was cracked, probably from beating on froze piston. Liner looks just like cast iron!!! I don't think they were using siliconized sleeves then, so question is what is preventing me from cranking up my lathe and turning out my own pair? I make sleeves for my scale airplane engines and can have the OD ground true for free. Worth a shot for $10 worth the CI and some dust?

I competed with model airplane engines that I modified (JOHNSON/SUPER TIGER) and can tell ya that it isn't the same material used with these bike engines.
These are much larger and are for sure made of CYLINDER materal.
SLeeves are not difficult to find.
In fact I have some that I've removed from damaged aluminum cylinder assys.
830-895-0654 is a number ya can reach me at if ya like. ...........lm
