Different types of seats

Looking through the various picts of bikes on this site, I see a few have the turned up front like mine, but not very many. Anybody know why they did this? My bike has the original material on the seat, which is stiff and has shrank, so its pulling the front part away back, from the tank. I'm going to recover my seat, and hopefully I can get this "saddle horn" back into place. I was considering changing it to the other stye, but I want to leave it as close to its original form.

That style seat was only used late in production(last couple years). I assume it was changed to enhance style and comfort.
