Unknown Part

Post by cbxmountainman » Sun Jul 17, 2011 9:39 am

I'm thinking it is off either a 1958 or 1959 250cc Dream dry sump one of which I used to have while in Japan. Converted mine to a 305cc as soon as the larger one came out. Just had to replace the liners and hog the cases out. Had an excellent Japanese mechanic who was also the dealer do the work. Think it cost me around $115.00 total. Those were definitely the days of yore. Even used to drag race it burning model airplane fuel which was really hard on the gas lines (changed them to model airplane type). Boy would that thing smell !!! Ran faster than stink!! Only thing faster was tyhe original Yamaha 250 twins (first year) and it was still close.

I appreciate the additional input, I sure didn't know what it was off of. I ALSO have been to Japan, but never had any dealing with those, as I was there at Misawa AFB, from Dec '67-Dec'69 and had a '66 CB72 that I built somewhat, with the aid of a buddy porting and polishing the head. I don't really know if there is any difference, but I was running the head and carbs from a CP305 and open megaphones. Never thought about model airplane fuel or anything like that.

I hear ya, those Yamaha 250s (1st one I saw, was in the states and it was a YDS-2 (I think that was the model) and it sure would get it! My Honda was always getting blown away by a Suzuki X6 Hustler.

I have sent the ebay seller, the info from here, as I like to try to help out, if I see that something is listed wrong and, Most of the time, I get friendly and appreciative responses from them. I figure that, sometimes, they are just passing on, what they have been told and don't know any better.

Oil Tank

Post by conbs » Tue Jul 19, 2011 12:34 am

That tank was listed 2 different times about two months ago. I sent the guy a message letting him know it was not from a CL, but that I thought it was from an early dry-sump Honda. Hmmm.

After getting responses here, I also sent him a message on this listing. Maybe he will realize it and list it correctly? Maybe? All we can do is TRY to help others. I sure learned something, because I didn't know that the early ones were dry sump.

I think that it's interesting that Honda returned to a dry-sump design for the ground breaking CB750, then quickly abandoned it again for the CB500 onwards.

Dry Sump Hondas

Post by cbxmountainman » Tue Jul 19, 2011 6:25 pm

I have a 1976 CB750 four that is a dry sump. I believe that it helps keep the engine cooler with the oil in a tank. Possibly not, but........................................

Yeah, it IS something, that Honda went back and forth on that. You know, with the oil tank by itself, it COULD be helping to keep the oil cooler. Might be interesting to give that a check and see just how the 2 systems compare. But it makes me wonder why Honda went back and forth with this.
