Well my mechanic John had to tear back into the engine because of a ticking sound that we both heard from the front of the right side of the engine at the exhaust valve. He found that the right side camshaft (ignition side) was loose. The left side has a nut and bolt that expands the end of the camshaft when it's inside the advance unit, so that side is nice and tight. But, if you grab ahold of the right side camshaft lobes and the advance unit sprocket, you can twist it back and forth and get quite a few degrees of play. John thinks that is what's making the ticking sound, and he believes that it will throw the valve timing off on that side as well. He has checked everything and it all looks like he put it together properly, so he's not sure what's going on. We replaced the advance unit about 5 years ago, and it looks brand new, so that's not likely the issue.
Has anyone experienced this problem? Is this a sign that the camshaft needs to be replaced, or is there another solution?
