Just came across this site after plenty of searching elsewhere. I came across a craigslist add this march and purchased a 1966 305cc Honda Scrambler for $350. The engine was off and in parts. The bottom wasn't seized but I was told the pistons needed to be replaced and the cylinders possibly honed. I'm new to all of this so my fathers been assisting me. He just has car mechanic skills.
I'm not quite sure how to measure the pistons. The Ohio Cycle site the has spare pistons says they go by .25 .5 .75 and 1. I'm not sure what that measurement it or were to measure that. I need to hone the cylinders so I'm also not sure if I get the pistons after seeing how much change has been made. If anybody can give some advice I appreciate it.
I'll post photos when I get him at a computer.[/b]
My 66 Scrambler
pistonsMatt, First thing, we recommend you list your location where you signed up so we know where you live. Someone down the street may be able to help you in a pinch.
Now then the pistons. The measurements you listed refer to 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and 1 mm oversize and would need to be bored out to that fit. If you did a basic refresh on this motor, you could get by with a hone job and stock rings and it would likely run getting you back on the road but you would have to expect this motor to burn oil and I would not expect to ride much farther than you would be willing to hitchhike home. To do a nice proper rebuild, take the cylinder block to a machinist and he will get you headed in the right direction. He would likely do a clean up bore, then you order the pistons to fit that bore and then he would hone to the correct tolerances. Then with a good head rebuild, you could have an engine worth riding a while. Rusty I agree. Since your replacing the pistons anyway a bore job makes sense. It should run in the neighborhood of $100-150. Relatively small price for the increase in reliability. 63 CA78
