Newbie...looking at my first bike on CL...need help

hello all! first off i just want to say how great of a resource this place is. i have been reading a lot on the forum and decided to join. i have been looking to buy my first cb77 and do work on it. i saw this posted on craigslist and it is listed as a 1964 cb77 but it clearly has scrambler pipes. i am looking for some advice on what to look for when i go to check it out and what would be a fair asking if the condition is as he says. just looking for advice on what the bike is and if it seems like it would be a good project to take on. any feedback would be appreciated. thanks for your time and patience...i am a complete starter here!

I'm not sure if it is a cb or a cl but I would probably grab it anyway. Especially if you are willing to work on it because you most definitely would be. jmo, Jeff H.

Other than the pipes and paint it looks to be a pretty standard early CB77. You seem to have all of the expensive tin parts there.

You need to check that the engine runs, or at least turns over. Check to see that all four gears can be selected. If the engine runs, listen for nasty nocks, rattles and untoward noises. Look for smoke from the pipes and look around for oil leaks.

If the bike was near my house at that price, I would have bought it already......

thanks for the advice. i spoke with the guy today and he said that the bike has about 10,000 miles and the engine turns over but it does not currently have a battery. then i found out that he does not have a title for the bike! he bought the bike years ago and it had no title at that time either. so i told him unless he gets a duplicate title for it i would not purchase the bike....such a let down! i guess the hunt continues for a cb77.

I don't know what it's like in MN, but no title never stopped me before in CA. Ther are some hoops to jump through, but not really a big deal.

I live about 100 NE of mpls/st paul. People in MN always tell me how easy it is to get titles for bikes in MN that don't have them. You may want to check into it because you might be able to pick the bike up cheap and then get a title for it.

Getting titles in WI is becoming increasingly difficult.

I live in St. Paul and titled two bikes this spring that I had bought without a title. All it takes is a few pictures, a bill of sale and a couple of forms, oh, and $45. It was pretty easy.
