Help with oil leak

Post by Buck » Thu Nov 30, 2006 10:09 pm

Hey guys, I need some sugestions on a nasty oil leak on my 62 CB77. Engine is fresh with all new seals but have developed an oil leak behind right engine cover. After riding oil leaks from drain holes in right cover and pulling off cover only shows oil spread around from sprocket and chain turning. I am about to pull it off again and run the bike on my lift without cover to see if I can locate leak. Any sugestions on what to look for while I'm in there? By the way, my CB is in the new VJMC magazine coming out Nov.-Dec. issue. Pictures were taken before the oil leak started!! Thanks Terry(Buck)Mitchell

Oil leak

We've had five CB77's over the past 12 years and either way you
have a major problem.

Check for bad R crank seal or cracked case that opens when the
engine heats up.

Bad news either way.

Pull the rotor and look at the top of the seal. If the steel bearing case wasn't indexed correctly the knock pin will have pushed out the case and oil from the top of the case which is supposed to lube the crank bearing will be coming out of the case. ................lm

messy oil leak

Thanks guys. The leak is behind the rotor somewhere. No oil getting on rotor or windings. I'll put it on the lift and clean everything behind cover then dust with white powder and run it till the leak rears it ugly head. Just about finished with a 1970 trail 90 on the lift now and then the Superhawk goes on. I'll post cause of leak as soon as I find it. Buck

Oil leak found. Seems the oil seal behind the neutral light switch had pushed out from case and oil leaking from there. Whew! Glad it was not serious! Will clean and put silver case sealer on seal and reinstall. Thanks for the suggestions guys, maybe I can ride easy now.
