hard to shift..any ideas?I would suggest you pull the oil pump and see what it looks like in there. If the screen is not all plugged up with sludge and it looks decent inside, it might just be gummy oil from stitting all those years preventing things from sliding on shafts as they should. If you just want to get it running, you could fill the sump up with kerosene and let it soak for a day or so and then see if you can get it to shift thru the gears without starting the engine. If that frees things up, drain the kero, put refill with oil, drain, refill with new oil and give her a go.
regards, Rob Thanks! Idea worked great! She shifts thru all gears (takes a little force..BUT i know not to jam em..and it seems to be getting better:) good enuff for this trip..im heading back to sacramento in thhe morning..i will post pics soon..man she's fun to ride! Thanx again guys for all the help! I think i did a lot in a week and had a blast! Cant wait to get her out to the west coast and start on the cosmetics:)
Which idea, the kero or something Dana sent to you in a PM? If it was the kero, my guess is with heat from running and fresh oil that has detergent in it, it will get better with use. You might run a batch of good synthetic oil thru it, like Rotella T6 to clean out that gummy oil and then go back to fossil oil. Some may argu with this recommendation. But I think one shot cannot hurt. Then make sure you clean out your centrifugal filter.
regards, Rob Yah..it was the kerosene idea..it seems to have loosened up the grime..i also pulled the oil pump..cleaned it out..no metal shavings..so that was good news! Drained it, filled it, fired her up and went thru the gears WAY better..so im sure with some riding time it will be ok..thanx guys! And yah..i will be in the area, unfortunately, im unable to get my beloved scrambler back to the sacramento area until probably august:( BUT mission accomplished! I got her running, took it for a few rides..and im beyond happy! Cant wait to ride with u guys soon! Take care!
