What changed?
What changed? As I'm assessing the bike and what is on it, what is missing, and what needs to be replaced, I am being exposed to the complex world of Superhawk parts. The CB77 ran from 1961-1967. I'm trying to find out the changes to the bikes over the course of production. The biggest difference I can see is tubular vs pressed frame, but I'm more concerned with functioning hardware.
I am not going for an authentic restoration, but as much as possible I want to use CB77 parts. So for example, is there a difference between a front brake drum from '61 and one from '67? Since there were 250 cc and 305 cc, is there a number or letter prefix that distinguishes between the different parts? What parts are different between the two? Also, there seems to be some interchangeability among the different CB models, and even between some of the CLs of the time. What is going to work and what won't? Also, I understand what OEM means, but I see a lot of parts identified as "NOS". What's that mean? NOS is 'New Old Stock', a new, unused part.
I don't think there were any pressed steel CB77 frames, and I think the brakes were the same part through the whole production. Many engine parts interchange between the CL77 and CB77, but the CL was kick start only, so no starter stuff and even the crankshaft is a little different, but can be modified. I'm a Superhawk novice, but I can tell you the list of parts that do/don't interchange would be a long list- the good news is that there's a steady supply of parts on Ebay- usually don't need to wait long for the part you need to show up in an auction. Get yourself a parts list if you can. If not - take a look here... http://www.cmsnl.com/cb72-hawk-250-usa_ ... Honda+cb72 This will give you clues but the parts list tell you which parts were common to several models. The centre number in the part number is the model code. 268 for CB72 and 275 for CB77. The CB77 uses mostly CB72 cycle parts but the engine parts specifically for 305 will have 275 numbers. Also both bikes will use parts from earlier bikes such as C72, C71 and C70 where no change was necessary. Generally CA models are touring, pressed steel frame CB - sports, CL - Scrambler. All use the same basic engine design but pistons carbs and heads vary. G '60 C77 '60 C72 '62 C72 Dream '63 CL72

eBay is what prompted the question! So, there are few changes in the production run?[/quote] Not exactly.
Front brake changed from SLS to TLS with press on arms and then to clamp on arms with different cams. Two or three changes to crankcases and on it goes. I'd guess that over the production run, maybe 80% of the parts changed, but in the middle years not much changed. Most are interchangeable though sometimes they need the matching parts.
