The farther I get into this, the less I think I know. And I've barely started. I thought I purchased most of a '67 Superhawk. Apparently the VIN confirms it as a '64. I took apart the front brake drum, and inside is the Suzuki logo! The front fork sure isn't from a CB.

Did I mention that I'm a beginner mechanic? I got this bike to teach myself how to tear down and rebuild an engine. So this thread is going to involve my asking questions and then digging deeper.

First question: I'm trying to remove the left cover. I've taken out the oil filter mount and the cover screws, but the shifter lever is preventing its removal. How do I get the lever off?

Lefty, there is a 10mm bolt that you remove than the shifter should wiggle right off. That's quite a project you got there! Good luck.....................D

That bolt--does it go through the shifter peg right at the shaft?

Nope, not jestin'. I ask because I don't see any such bolt, but I see a hole where a bolt might once have been. If this is where the bolt goes, it means I need to apply a generous amount of WD-40 to get it loose, because nothing else has.

I'm new at engine repair, brand new to motorcycle repair, and there's a lot of missing parts and hillbilly substitutions on this bike. Given how sparse the service manual is (and how muddy the pictures are), I can assure you I am completely clueless.

If you don't have a bolt running through it should be removable, as is. You can use a screwdriver or chisel to try to spread the gap on the piece connected to the spindle. Once it loosen it up a little bit you can pop it off by gently prying in between the shifter and case. Pry on one side of the shifter, then the opposite until you eventually work it off. I have very little experience and there is probably a much better way, but this works for me.
Good luck in your build!
