I'm in the middle of refurbishing a collection of shocks, so it will take a little time to get the details. The rod seal looks fairly standard, but I'll check the dimensions and numbers and post here. The nut on the bottom of the damper rod is staked (peened over) so that needs care when removing.

As for the oil - I think Honda describe it as 'light machine oil'. I'm going to try something a little thicker to see if I can tame the action on the Dream.

I have sent a collection of damper bodies and chrome covers off to the chromers and they will take around 10 weeks to come back.

Watch this space (but don't hold your breath.....)

Yeah, lest see this. I want to improve the suspention performance. Ride the CA78 1966 dream today and it was a little out of control over humps and bumps. need them seal sizes etc.

Hi Jackie

I'm new as well and I have just stripped by CB77 rear units for chroming.
As my units are '65 it isn't hard to compress them.
Put the adjuster at the lower setting and try to cpmpress them with help from a "male" person of substance na dwhilst compressed take the two top colletts out and release the unit slowly and the plastic cover just lift off.
There is a retaining round "nut" within the lower chrome casing that does come out. First you must drill the two places which are recessed and there are spiggotts to prevent the nut from turning. A large screwdriver released mine.
There are a few notes on the Forum from me asking for advise if you look back at them.
I should add that if you feel that compressing the units should be done with a mechanical devise and adapted spring compressor can be adapted.

I am very interested in this process. I was wondering if you could post a tutorial or more information on the complete disassembly of the shock. I have a few Dream shocks that need this badly and would love to fix them.

What were your findings and what was the outcome on the thicker oil?

Can these seals be purchased or are they some ultra rare part?

Sorry - restoration has been on hold for some time because of pressure of work. I will get back to this in the next few months when things ease up.

I think a bigger problem than finding new seals is getting everything back together. On these type shocks the body is pressed or crimped over on the top holding the seal in place and creating a very tight fit. This type shock wasn't meant to be rebuilt and it's going to be very difficult to un-do this crimping without damaging the shock body beyond repair.
