European headlight holder CA77This loks the same as my C72 which at the moment, I cannot dismantle. I can see a circular compression spring in the holder but cannot work out how to twist it undone so I can show you the parts.
Here are some pages from the parts book. G '60 C77 '60 C72 '62 C72 Dream '63 CL72
'61 CB72 '64 CB77 '65 CB160 '66 Matchless 350 '67 CL77 '67 S90 '77 CB400F OK - I went out into the workshop and attacked my lamp with WD40. My bulb holder just pushes into the headlamp and is retained by the rubber cup. The spring clips work with a slightly different style of headlamp, as shown below. Jensen's type is on the right, with the little slots and low-profile fitting.
The type with the spring clip is the one on the left. The springs lock into those 'L" shape slots. My Moto Guzzi has a lamp like that. The next three pics are my C72 lamp in various stages of assembly. My rubber cup is badly perished but does still fit over the ring and holds the bulb holder in place. Hope that helps G '60 C77 '60 C72 '62 C72 Dream '63 CL72
'61 CB72 '64 CB77 '65 CB160 '66 Matchless 350 '67 CL77 '67 S90 '77 CB400F Socket SupporterMy rubber cup is not nearly as stiff as Graham's appears to be. My part diagram shows a #11 socket supporter which is the spring clip I asked about. Graham's apparently does not have that, using the compression fit from the rubber cup to hold it in. But, my socket also looks a little different from the picture in my diagram.
Headlight Unit with replaceable bulbSo, I think I may have figured out my headlight mystery.
My ’64 parts diagram lists 3 headlight units. 1 sealed beam and 2 that use the APF-type , replaceable bulb. I thought my unit was the #3 unit, the diagram of which I posted above. In looking closer, I think I actually have the #1 headlight unit, the diagram of which Graham posted. But, I think I have the socket for the #3 unit which appears will not fit in the #1 unit. The ’64 parts manual just lists the 3 different headlight units. But the ’68 parts manual on the Bill Silver Restoration CD tells more: Headlight unit 1 – Used in “General” (This appears to be the headlight unit I have) Headlight Unit 2 – Used in “U.S.A.” Sealed Beam Headlight Unit 3 Used in “Germany, England Switzerland and France” (The spring clip I was looking for is indeed European – but this does not appear to be the unit I have. But, I think the socket I have IS for this unit) The 1973 Parts Manual on the Silver’s CD only shows the USA headlight unit. So, instead of a spring clip I am looking for a stiffer rubber socket like Graham's. Thanks to all for your help. Exactly!
Your headlamp is the one that needs the rubber socket but your socket needs the headlamp with the slots. I'll have a look through my stocks and see if there are any swaps we can do! G '60 C77 '60 C72 '62 C72 Dream '63 CL72
'61 CB72 '64 CB77 '65 CB160 '66 Matchless 350 '67 CL77 '67 S90 '77 CB400F Headlight socketI found an NOS socket 33130-253-812 at Ohio Cycle. A little spendy, but NOS parts do avoid a lot of headache. Not the kind of thing a guy needs with a headlight.
Thanks again to everyone.
