Tires for the Dream and SuperhawkTires for the Dream and SuperhawkThis might be a bit spammish but since it comes up here so often I thought it might be helpful.
After a bit of looking I have found a German company that manufactures quality tires and offers many sizes and tread patterns suitable for our vintage bikes. The company is Heidenau. Somewhat new to the US but not so new to other parts of the world. While they don't have a 3.25x16 for the Dream they do offer a 3.50x16. (I think the Dream looks good with a slightly wider tire anyway) I have some tires already on order and will verify actual size but according to the distributor they should be very close to that size. These are $68 each plus $10 shipping. If you are looking for stock size tires for the Superhawk they have the 3.00x18 in the same tread pattern as above. $67 each plus $10 shipping. The front 2.75x18 has the below tread pattern. Price on this one is $62 each plus $10 to ship. Many other sizes also available to fit other vintage bikes. These tires have appropriate speed and load ratings for motorcycles. These are not moped tires. For more info and pricing on other tires check it out here. http://www.scramblercycle.com/heidenau-tires.html Thanks, Kevin
So Kevin, do you have the SuperHawk sizes in hand? I'd be interested in ordering a set -- in your estimation, how do they compare with what has been available in the past, specifically Dunlop K82's, the Michelin Gazelles and Cheng Shins? Do you know if they're comparable to any? I'm personally not a big fan of Cheng Shins, so I'd be hoping that they'd be better than them. I'd probably order a 3.25 rear and a 2.75 front, as the load rating is a bit higher on the 3.25 than the 3.00 and seems to fill out the rear fender a little better (at least to my eye).
Just to confirm -- the front (2.75x18) is P (93mph) rated, and the rear are S (112mph) rated, correct? As well, if you have these tires in stock (and they aren't drop shipped), do you happen to know roughly what the date codes are on any of these tires? Should say something like 4410 (44th week of 2010) in a small oval section on the sidewall -- hopefully they don't say something like 3606! Have you ridden on any of their tires at all? I'd be interested in reading your opinions on the ride quality, handling, etc, if you have. Any additional info you could provide would be great -- you have my attention! Hello Vince,
I have some on order and expect to have them on hand shortly. I will be posting some comparison pictures and measurements to other tires already mounted on Superhawk and Dream rims. To be honest its going to be hard to answer your question about how they compare to the Cheng Shin and Dunlop K82 without putting a few miles on a set. I fully expect them to be better than the Cheng Shin tires based on information I have found on the Heidenau tires in general. They make these tires specifically for vintage bikes. The speed rating on the Dream tires is 93 mph. The rating on the front 2.75x18 Superhawk tire is also 93 mph and the rear 3.00x18 is 112 mph. Speed and load ratings for all the tires can be found at the bottom of this page. http://www.scramblercycle.com/heidenau-tires.html Thanks, Kevin
