Hi
I have dismantled the rear shocks on my CB77 for chroming and need advise as to what type of oil to refill them with. The Wm states 60# Spinner oil; what is this in current terms, is it SAE 2.5 or 5? The WM also states 47cc in the text but 52cc on the Spec pages! Which is it, does anyone know?
I also found a circlip in each unit when pouring the oil outbut no reference to this is in the WM or in any of the pages on this forum

Any help would really be appreciated.

Cheers for the very prompt reply. It's 1965 and an American model; engine CB77E400---, frame begins 400 as well. Pictures at this stage would be of bits everwhere so when it's completed I'll do it no problem. It'a a 15 week waiting list at the chromers so it'll be Spring before it's built.
Have you done your rear shocks? It's often easier to replace them bu I want to have it with as many original bits as possible, even the engine screws. I'm using the spokes again nickle plated like my CL which I've just chromed.
My questions relates to the type and correct quanty of oil; perhaps the description of the oil is a US term?
I take it you have a '77.

Hi Karl

I'm doing the same job on some CB77 and CL77 / 72 shocks at the moment. My shrouds and shock bodies will be at the chromers for the next 8 weeks, so it is not an urgent job. I was going to build a rig to test the viscosity and then come up with something similar. I have measured the quantities of oil that came out of all the shocks I dismantled for comparison. Around 50cc sounds about right per leg.

A friend with a CB77 in the UK suggested that it was 'light machine oil' but I can check what he used and get back to you. Where in UK are you?

Hiya Karl,

Yes I'm working on my 1966 CB77 (the rear shocks as we speak). Notice how I cleverly sidestepped the original oil question. That's because I too don't know the answer, so I wanted to wait for others to post the correct answer 8^)

Spindle oil viscosity

Conoco Oil states on their website that spindle oil is made in only one viscosity that being "ISO 15" and is used with high speed needle bearings. I'm not sure what ISO 15 would work out to in suspension oil weight index but I thought this might be another clue .

Hi,

It's a chock, so why not use shock oil ? Castrol ( http://www.castrolmoto.com/en/products/ ... rk_oil.php ), which I use to refill, works great, and can be bought in a range of viscosities (2,5W, 5 W and 10 W) Mix it for middle viscosities. I used 7,5 W, but I am 85 kilo's light. Please check the state of the oil seal, and replace if necessary. Of course other brands will do too.
