I gave them a call and they said that they don't like to do old exhausts because the carbon inside screws up their tanks. Did you clean out the carbon before you sent the exhaust to the plater? If so, what did you do to remove the carbon that was successful enough that they plated them for you.

I assume when you say pipes, you mean just the pipes and no muffler, correct?

Ah Rob, you made the fatal mistake of sending your stuff to Ronnie Brown -- now you're an addict! If you had only sent your stuff to some place of lesser quality and took three months, you probably wouldn't be feeling the way you do.

I've had Ronnie do all of my chroming work, and I can say without a doubt that his quality is outstanding, his customer service is second to none, and I defy you to find another chromer with a faster turnaround time.

I think I've mentioned this in another thread, or could have been on the Triumph forum, but anyway there is a guy in CT that restored Nortons primarily and other Brit bikes for folks. He had a Norton for sale and that is how we met. He had three bikes on lifts he was working on and all had perfect chrome. To make a long story short, he said he'd tried other platers. Their plating may be good but their prep work and polishing is iffy. He had a rim rechromed by a local plater that until then, I had heard good things about, and the rim came back so over polished in some places that the nipples passed thru the nipple holes. He said he will not use anyone but Ronnie Brown, period.

I did not ask Ronnie when we spoke about his requirements to do exhausts. Could be that $65/ft for exhaust is that high because it includes a thorough de-carboning of the inside to keep his tanks from being contaminated. It all boils down to man-hours.

Snakeoil, all I used was fishing line with a washer tied on one end and steel wool tied on the other end dipped in cleaning solvent. Several passes pulled thru and rinsed with soapy water.And correct, no muffler.
