CL77 Rims... Early vs Late

Post by WrenchRust » Fri Jan 14, 2011 8:51 pm

Hoping somebody might know if there is a difference in the early model small hub rims Vs. the later model big hub rims? Did Honda use the same rim and just change the Hub and Spokes? Or did changing the hub and spokes mean having to rework the entire front rim?

I've been looking for a front rim for my 67 CL77 for months now and just found a small hub wheel with spokes, hub and rim? Will this work for me?

Thanks,
Joel

I was reading thru the posts and just happened to have the parts manual open on my desk. The early wheel (Type 1) has a different part number than the later, Type 2 wheel. With a smaller hub the spoke angle is changed slightly. So I would assume this is the reason for the part number change. The holes in the rim are drilled at a slightly different angle. Although there may be other differences as well.

As to whether there is enough angular difference to present a risk of spoke breakage if you mix them, I'll leave to the seasoned veterans of these bikes.

regards,
Rob

Thanks Rob. That's kinda what I figured but was hoping that it would be otherwise. I checked the parts book before I asked the question and saw the different numbers, but guessed it wouldn't hurt to ask.

I'll keep looking... although the guy does have some good parts I'm getting pretty cheap, Side covers, Chain guard, Exhaust, All pretty nice too... Any one need a small hub and front rim?

Depending how authentic you want your bike to look (flanged rims) you could look out for an early CB450 rim or wheel. I'm pretty sure the CB450 has a 19 inch rim with the same spoking pattern and the same hub as the late CL77.

I bought an entire wheel advertised as CB450 but is was a CL77 complete with flanged rim. I also have a genuine Honda NOS front rim for the CL77 which is without the flanges.

Joel

The tyre is too wide for the front of a CL which makes me think the rim may have been replaced with a wider one.

Should be a 19 inch rim if it's an early 450 - I cannot see from the pics. Check with the seller. If you put a 3.25 x 19 tyre on it - should be OK
