Sidestand for "Ugly Betty"?Sidestand for "Ugly Betty"?When I first laid eyes on my 1963 Super Hawk she was without a center stand and was leaning on a side-stand with a Stanley tape measure between the side stand and the floor. I thought that was a bid odd but I took delivery anyway, and when I stood her up at home I had to use a 2 x 4 on the flat underneath the stand just to keep me from worrying it would tip over.
When I stripped her down to the frame I noticed that the rear-most center stand mount hole on the left side of the frame was elongated and I assumed it was from wear. I had the hole in the frame welded and re-drilled to make for a nice fit for the center stand bolt. All was well with the center stand but, for sheer convenience, I wanted to re-mount the side stand. When I tried re-mounting it a year ago, I noticed three things: -the holes on the side-stand bracket no longer mated with the holes on the frame, with the rear-most hole being out of line -when on the side stand, the lean on the bike seemed too much--a 2 x 4 on the flat was needed to make it look safe -there was a lot of slack at the side stand pivot bolt hole In the year since, I have had the pivot hole in the bracket welded and drilled to make for a nice, tight fit with the pivot bolt. That should reduce the lean somewhat, but not the entire 1 1/2" of a 2 x 4. I wonder now whether a previous owner had elongated the frame hole to allow the side stand to fit, and I wonder if it is the correct side stand at all! Was it made for a CYP with 17" wheels? I have attached photos of the side stand hoping that someone might be able to identify it as a proper fit for my CB77. The bracket is stamped, "MADE IN JAPAN" and all parts are chrome plated. I have considered getting the leg lengthened and grinding out the hole in the frame to make it work but I really don't want to be trying to adapt a side stand that was not made for my frame. Thanks for enduring the history. Wilf
I think that's an aftermarket stand. There was some discussion about the sides stands in this thread: http://www.honda305.com/forums/viewtopi ... 0&start=40
While you're welding and reinforcing, it seems as though you should reinforce the bracket it mounts to as they often break.
I haven't looked at my bike in some time and just noticed I'm in the same boat as you. The bad thing is, I had an original side stand on one of my parts bikes that I sold this summer. I know what you mean about the bike leaning over too much. I noticed the same thing on mine. I wonder if there is a current aftermarket stand that would fit properly. The CYPs also had 18 inch wheels. My guess is that the stand has bent over time. Davo davomoto
