White smoke out of left muffler?

This is my first motorcycle and I am not very mechanical but willing to learn.

There is white smoke coming out of the left muffler. I have tried to tune the carbs with no luck.

Smells like its burning oil but compression test shows good so it cant be the piston rings or the valves?
What could it be otherwise?
Ideas? Thoughts? Suggestions?

It runs and rides great. I do think it bogs down quite a bit when going from a complete stop. I usually have to rev it higher than 2000rpms when starting to move or it feels like its going to stall out. Is that normal?

White or blue smoke usually indicates oil in the cylinder. What was your compression readings? I'm still new myself to these engines, but a normal engine's compression is around 125-145psi.
Is there any kind of leak around the head on the left side? Is the oil filled properly (not over filled)? I'm sure LM'll be on here in a bit and help ya out.

Sometimes residual oil in the exhaust itself will cause the bike to smoke once it gets hot, just a possibility...............................................D

White smoke, if it is truly white is water vapor. It could only be water lying in your muffler and should burn off with time. But I'm very doubtful that it is white smoke. I think it is blue, which is oil.

Compression only tells you that your compression rings are good, not the oil rings. You could have worn or broken oil rings and still have decent compression.

Valve guides, a leaking head gasket, a cracked head could all lead to oil consumption. Does it smoke all the time or only when you first start it and then it clears up? If it smokes more after it has sat, that would imply oil coming down from the head, either thru the guides or a crack. If it smokes all the time, my guess would be worn or broken oil ring. I had a CL160 that ran good, but smoked out of one cylinder like an insect fogger. Actually spit out out the exhaust. It had a broken ring.

The plug on that side should tell you how bad the oil usage is.

Bogging at low RPM could be something unrelated like a very high final drive (small wheel sprocket) or timing issues. Might even be jetting. The valves being tight would do this too, but that would be reflected in a compression test being low.

Compression spec for the engine are 149 psi new and repair at 114. So you should be somewhere in between.

Oil is at lower line. Just did the comp test and left smoky cylinder is 135psi and right is 150psi. seems okay to me. No leaks anywhere.

Are oil rings on the piston? What part number is this oil ring?

It does smell like oil burning. Also the left header gets considerably hotter than the normal right header. It even has some discoloration on the left from the heat.

I think the smoke dies down as it is ridden longer. its pretty bad when it first starts. Sometimes if I forget to turn the fuel on and start it up it will start smoking only when the fuel begins to go through. But it still does smoke all the time.

My compression results are 135psi (left) and 150psi (right)

The oil rings are on the piston and require ya remove the head and cylinder.
Ya now say heat and it also bogs.
Have ya checked the timing of both sets of points.
Let us know. ............lm
