capacitor upgrade on a 305 Dream?capacitor upgrade on a 305 Dream?Hey guys,
Thinking about doing a capacitor upgrade... Anyone tried it yet? reccomendations? Will it help me start the bike (with a kick) easier? Just a thought? You can tell me if I am being niaeve in thinking it would help. -Sascha Hi Sascha. If you are talking about the rectifier then don't go looking for an upgrade. I'll send one to you for free. They don't have them at Radio Shack over here anymore (The Source as it is called now). I crossed the border to Detroit awhile back and bought a few extra while I was there. I think I picked up the 25 watt bridge rectifiers. Let me know. Jeff.

http://www.honda305.com/forums/viewtopi ... highlight= Mine is somewhat cold-blooded, and requires full choke to start. Once it fires, it still requires full choke for a few seconds to continue running. If it hasn't been started in a while, it requires a wait after opening the petcock to give time for the carb to fill (I use the "tilt the bike over sideways" method to speed up that process. There was an interesting comment in the above thread about the "prime" position on the key switch which I haven't tried yet. 66 dream, 78 cb750k, 02fz1, 09 wing
Hey Guys...
I should just describe things istead of making up names for the wrong items!! haha, I actually just got a new condensor (cylinder that sits on top of the motor with a black cap and wire that connects to the points breaker... Right?) Yeah, I was thinking of upgrading my rectifier (The thing that looks like its a square box made of out sheets of metal (kinda old looking). Jeff - if you dont mind parting with an extra I would be greatly appreciative! Brewsky - Really interesting point you made there that I could use your opinion on. So I replaced the ignition (key starter) with a button (for aesthetics) and wonder if there is any impact to my ability to start the bike if there is an on switch and a prime switch on the key starter... Is there any difference? How would you guys reccomend I wire it if so? I have a feeling pictures might be helpful in this discussion... Thanks! Sascha The "prime" positon allows use of the starter without power to the coil. The same effect can be had by using the kickstarter with the switch off.
I'm not sure how you would "upgrade" the capacitor. It's sole purpose is to suppress sparking at the points, which will mess with your timing. Generally if they're either good or bad (shorted internally or to ground.) I believe that any capacitor for a 12 volt ignition would do the same job. The biggest difference is size and shape, and in this case the long wires. Something could be adapted, but shouldn't improve anything over a good stock capacitor. The best upgrade in this area would be to go to the electronic ignition. 63 CA78
I think you may run into problems if you replace the stock key switch with a conventional ignition switch.
The stock switch causes additional coils in the magneto to be activated when in the lights on position. Since there is no voltage regulator in the system, eliminating that option could cause over/undercharging to the battery. I'm sure it could be done, but would probably require at least two replacement switches. I would defer to e3steve on a wiring diagram for that, though. Guys, I think im up *#$& creek with this one... Im going to need to take lots of pics and get you all to assist on this thing because I already bored out the ignition hole and mounted the button that is acting as the starter...
I also mounted a second switch that acts as the power 'on' button. Im so screwed. -Sascha
