[/b]What do you do when you don't have a strap wrench?
On my 1966 cb77 the chrome covers had to be slid off. However, mine have NEVER been off in the bike's whole life. They were very stuck! PB blaster over various days did not get them loose. Various attempts at making my own strap wrench out of sundry straps was to no avail. My good friend Brian saved me when he brought over a huge bronze bushing that we could cut more or less in half (we left one side larger). The bushing was roughly the size of the fork tube, and with a tiny bit of squeezing in the vice, we fit the bushing to the chrome cover.
A bit of tapping on the cover, and off it came with no damage and no problems. I suppose if you don't have a large, bronze bushing like my friend did, you could find a piece of pipe. It just needs to fit pretty snug on the chrome cover. Once off, you can take out the snap ring, and the seals come right out like described in this forum elsewhere - just pull sharply on the inside tube, and the seal will come out.
CB77 Front fork disassemblyWell..
You got luck then. I did the same thing with mine, and with no succes, I heated it, you name it all. nothing worked. So this was the result : They (both) finally came loose when I had all 4 of those 'cuts' , so you can imagine how insanely stuck it was. The seals where more or less the same story : Gotta love that :P I would say, that the prev. owner used locktite on it. I really was insane. Front fork disassemblyHey Bonjour - yes, yours looks a lot worse than mine was. Mine pretty much slid right down with light tapping. Maybe the PB Blaster did help that somewhat. I sure hope you can find the parts you will need! GG
I already have new covers !
CMSNL had listed them in the CB72 section, I was lucky, I had the last pair :) But it's not such a big deal if you can't find new one's, basically it are just hollow pipes, I already had the idea before I found the CB72 covers , to ad stainless steel pipe's. It are just hollow pipe's with a ring in it, nothing special about it. Easy to duplicate if you need to or want to :) 'Of course I've already taken a very modest position on the monetary system, I do take the position that we should just end the Fed.' - Ron Paul
