Bad ground to light? Possibly a loose connection?

Just at idle, or right throughout the rev range? At idle, and in sympathy with the magnets passing the stator coils, it's pretty normal; as long as it evens out above about 2000rpm.

As you don't have electric start, then there's no real quick way to load test the battery. If you don't run it for a few days, check the terminal voltage before starting it again; should be 12.2V-12.4V minimum. If it's less than 12V then suspect the battery as being past its best.

Also, switch on the lights (engine off) and check the voltage difference between the reading at the battery terminals and then the voltage inside the headlamp bucket at the beam unit/lamp. If there's a vast difference (1V or greater) between the two readings then you should also look for poor connections.
