I am at a loss, I thought it was low compression butHello all,
My '65 Cb77 starts and idles (for a while) but as soon as I put it into 1st gear it dies. If it doesn't die as soon as I put it in first (although it does 99% of the time) it dies when going in to second or uphill. I tested the compression, about 165 in both cylinders. Any ideas? Thanks, Matt
Hello j.
Help me understand how the neutral switch can'will affect the wire syatem as it is grounded when in neutral. Help. .........lm
Just a question how could the neutral switch be the problem? Keep in mind I am not one that has this bike. Can the neutral switch act as a kill switch on this bike? On my CA77 it shorts to ground to light the neutral light. As to the running I agree carbs, ignition maybe points? time to do a full tune up I think. I myself would start simple. 1 you need fire at the plugs it runs so it seems that you have that but maybe week 2 compression you seem to have that as you have tested it 3 GAS I have seen allot of gas engines run when started then when you give it gas well the main jet may be plugged and no gas. 4 After you are sure that the carb or carbs are working Look for vacuum leaks. I do this with the bike running and use something like carb cleaner and spray all of the intakes from the carb to the head and look for RPM changes. if you spray what your using at the intake or air cleaner side of the carb you will see how this affects the running of the bike. Depending on what you use it will speed up the engine or slow it down some things burn better then others. NOTE TRY NOT TO USE SOMETHING SUCH AS GAS TO DO THIS..... That works but well you might not like the results as in FIRE in the Hole!!! My first thought would be that the carb or carbs are not giving you gas on the power side. Note If you have two carbs that one could affect the problem of no power. My rule for a running gas engine is: 1 Good sprak 2 Gas with air 3 Compression 4 The rest is a good timing and just good tune up. 1974 CT90

Re: I am at a loss, I thought it was low compression butMaybe a dumb question!
Are the carb slides installed correctly?. .........lm
Hi Ed and flutetears,
Don't know, it doesn't sound logical either, but I encountered it with a dream a few months ago, but the electrics weren't fresh either. Normally the switch does contact to mass, and closes the circuit that makes the lamp starts to burn. In gear the contact is always open, and should not affect anything. I did read the question, and this came into my mind. The dream just quit on me, while shifting into gear, just like some sort of kill switch. Got the bike running after unplugging the neutral switch. There were some more electric issues with the bike, in the end I replaced the electrics and stator by another one, issue's were gone. Maybe it was the only mass seen from the battery / ignition due to bad mass elsewhere or just a faulty ignition switch ( the plus wire from the neutral lamp is running to the plus of the battery via the ignition switch). My memory triggered on the shifting thing, because it took me hours to get that dream riding. Everything was OK, idling, revving, but as soon as I shifted the bike in gear, it died on me, every time again. Found out that the the spark was gone as soon I shifted in gear. I had two choices, find the error, or replace the electrics with a used known good set, I chose for the last option. Jensen assembly of Japanese motorcycles requires great peace of mind (Pirsig)
