Starter switch assembly

Ok folks, here is the next hurdle for me to get over; In another post I mentioned I have a starter switch issue. I disassembled my switch, cleaned the corrosion and put it back together. Now it is constantly activating the starter. I can't figure it out. Am I missing a piece? With the set-up as is, I can't see how it would not be making contact constantly. Here are some pics. Can anyone see anything missing or out of order? ...

I forgot to take a picture of the fully assembled innards. That brass spade like piece fits over top of the insulator with the wire soldered to it and gets screwed to the aluminum. The end of the spade seems to be inserted down the front of the insulator between the spring covered shaft of the push button and the fiber board. However, the spring is in constant contact with the contact point on the board and the spring is in contact with the shaft of the button, so...constantly grounded. Why is it like this? I must have lost something although I can't find a schematic for this. Help.

Jeff, if you dis' the yellow/red in the headlamp, does the starter still kick off when the key is turned on? If not then that removes the solenoid from the fault equation.

I've not had my handlebar ass'y apart for a couple of years, but I think the spring is held back by a tiny, perforated brass plate; the button penetrates that plate and 'makes' the contact to ground.

How do you upload images? I can't get a download of yours without a rt-click and 'Save as...', then the resolution is too low to get a good zoom.

i just assembled one a month or so ago, and cant remember the order off the top of my head, i do remember it was hard to get it just right, obviously the 1 wire must not ground to the frame til you push the button. if I get a chance ill take a pic of mine.

the parts are correct, but the spring should be resting against the surface of the brass plate (not passing through and touching the contact on the board).

also...make sure the board is placed in the groove of the switch housing. otherwise, the contact on the board will always be in contact with the brass plate.

Hi Steve. I use Photobucket. My images get resized by them. I don't like it as I am a little near sighted and I appreciate being able to enlarge a picture for detail. I haven't looked into a better way to upload photos yet. Jeff.

Before I try the suggested fixes I would like some input into a thought I had. I took that brass spade piece out and sanded it clean on all sides. Is it possible that what I thought was corrosion and crud (because of nearsightedness or naivety) was actually a non conductive barrier between the spade and the contact on the circuit board? The starter button worked until I disassembled and "cleaned" it. Does any9one have their's apart and can check if there is a coating on the side of the spade that rests against the circuit board?
