Wiring Harness Question

Question? I found a white tag located on the wire harness under the seat. I've spoke with several people who said that the year of the bike should be on this tag. It is not, however there are numbers on it. Not sure what they mean though. The number is 213-0004 or 273-0004 followed by what looks like a upside down Y. Does anybody have any idea what that number is. Is it a part number for the harness. Any help would be appreciated. It is on a 1965 CL77, Frame Number is CL77-1008242 Engine Number is CL77E-1008169

273 is the Honda "product code" for a CL72. I am not sure exactly when Honda changed to the new part numbering system, but I believe it was in 1965. My CL77 parts book (with new part numbers) shows the wiring harnesses "A" and "B" with the middle number (product code) as 273 meaning that the same harness was used on CL72's and CL77's.

Does the wiring on your bike appear to hook to this harness and components without any issues?

The number you found may be the old Honda parts number and correct and original for your CL77. Or, it may be that even if your bike would have come from Honda with a harness bearing the new part number, a PO changed the harness to the one you have now which would be essentially identical to the original, and came off of an older CL72.

Just a couple of ideas. Anybody disagree?

Yes, it appears to be the original harness everything has far has I can tell appears to be factory. All the wiring ties into the harness nicely. You may be right though, it could have come from a CL72 has I think my bike has a CL72 front fender. Not sure though it has 8 holes that mount it, but next to each hole there is another hole with a bolt and nut that mount to nothing. Anybody have any ides on this.

Derek, the part number may be the old Honda part code, a different system than newer parts. The 65 CL77 should have an 8 hole fender and brace, some PO may have drilled some extras? pics are allways helpful.

An 8-hole front fender is correct for a 1965 CL77. I can't say what the other holes are. Drilled by PO?

Yours should also have steel sliders on the forks with fender mount holes behind the centerline of the sliders. Small hub in the front wheel with single leading shoe brakes. Single arm to engage the brakes.

As I understand, in 1965, the CL77 was introduced which was just a CL72 with a bigger top end on the motor making it a 305 instead of a 250. All else was I think the same as CL72.

conbs you are correct about the steel sliders and small hub with the single lever.

The first 65 CL77 I bought had an aftermarket fender bracket. The fender had extra holes and bolts and nuts to plug them seems the aftermarket bracket had different lenght stays than the factory bracket and would not matchup to the original holes.
