Folks - Today I went to a friends house where he showed me his bike that he bought second hand about 35 years ago. It is titled as a 1968 but is definately a 305 Scrambler with numbers CL77-1066776 and engine CL77E-1066801. In looking at Bill Silver's guide, this would suggest that it is one of the last ones made, at least within the last 800 or so and that would seem to me to be within the last few weeks of production.
The bike is in poor to fair shape and the owner says it has lost second gear. It has sat in an unclimate controlled garage in Florida so "surface" rust is everwhere. The engine is not stuck though :). One thing that caught my eye is that the headlight appears to be from a CB since it includes both a speedo and a tach, he claims it is original. The frame has been rewelded at the lower front joint and he told me that the bike was at one time bent pretty good, his father cut the joint and straightened the upper main frame, then heated and re-welded the joint :( Sorry, no pictures at this time.
I am working on him to sell me the bike (for reasonable), but like many of us, this was one of his favorites and it seems special to him. In any case, I may get it over to my place and clean it up for fun...
