C77 winkers

Post by Eljeef » Wed Aug 18, 2010 7:06 am

Hello. Does anyone have an answer for this situation? My headlamp assembly is not fully together yet (that is to say there are a couple bulbs not working yet...neutral lamp, speedo light, my brake light is not grounded). All of my turn signals light up when power is supplied but they do not blink. Does the fact that some bulbs are not working or plugged into their proper positions affect blinking action or is it just a defective flasher? Thanks, Jeff H.

Hi,

Wiring issue or flasher issue, and / or maybe a power issue. The relay needs a certain load in WATS, it's written on the relay (if original). If the lamps are to "light", the flasher won't work either.

What I do to test it is take the bulbs out, take the relay out, take the 12 V battery out of the bike and test the system before you build it on your bike.

My bike was issued with winkers so everything is original to the bike. I will locate the flasher and test it out first. Thank you.

The OEM flasher relay was probably the bi-metal strip type; switch on the load (winker) > the strip heats up and bends away from the contact > the strip cools and bends back > (repeat process). This means that it's load- and voltage-dependent (2 x 10W = 20W total load @ 13V nominal), ergo if the battery voltage is low then the flash rate will be slow, slower or even not at all.

Connect a charger for a few hours then try the same operations. If there's just a static winker, front and rear, then get a new, modern electronic flasher relay; this type's flash rate is constant, and pretty much irrespective of supply voltage (to a point), circa 120fpm.

Sorry it took me so long to reply to this. My battery is fully charged and the lights still don't flash. I pulled the flasher out from inside the frame to get a look at it. Now if I try it, it buzzes like crazy until I ground it out again. I hooked up a modern flasher to the leads (with the original flasher still hooked up) and it buzzed also until I grounded it out. Flashers still did not work. Maybe my flasher is toast. Maybe the modern one cannot work properly with the original one hooked up with it. Perhaps it's something else. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Jeff H.

Hi,

You are able to open up the relay (pic 1), in there is a small screw (3). With this screw the relay can be adjusted (do this while the relay is fully functions, so in fly).

The best way to do this is get the relay out, and make a setup with bulbs as in your bike. Get the battery out of the bike and connect to the basis setup.

If this doesn't work, the condenser is shot (top of the relay housing). I can fix this, but that takes more effort then buying a new one.

btw, this relay belongs to a CB72, early type, not to dream. The difference is the bracket and that a dream relay uses heavier bulbs. The inside is the same, the difference between them is the little resistor for a dream it has a different resistor.

Geez Jensen, you really went out of your way for me on this. Thank you so much. I'll take mine apart and have a go now that you've broken it down into steps for me. Thanks again. You really are a credit to this forum. Jeff H.
Here are a couple of pics of my flasher...
