Okay boys, I was a wannabe last week when I found this forum. But that's history. Today I bought the '67 CL77 I've been asking about and with which folks like Davomoto have been helping (thanks again) and got a spare engine in the deal. Wore my best big frown, not that interested face and when the guy would not take my offer, he gave me his lowest price and said he'd throw in a spare engine.
So, I just put it in the barn and will snap some pics tomorrow. I'll also fill out the survey so you can add another survivor to your found list.
The spare engine is interesting. Looks to be one of the first out of the Honda factory. Serial number is 1000415. Might have missed or added a zero, but the last three digits are 415. The rest are zeroes and the first is a 1. I know they started production with 1000000 so this is truly one of the first out of the back door at Honda. The killer is this was a complete bike and he threw the frame, which was fine, in the dumpster last week. He's a parts guy and said he has too much stuff to keep the junk that does not move.
Anyway, I'm happy. Bike is a runner and runs well. Looks like it has never been apart other than side covers nor out of the frame. New seat cover, new paint (dull silver and very close to original) no rust in the tank or any cleaning, Kreme-ing or etching, rebuilt petcock, new OEM foot rubbers and grips, correct everthing from what I can see. Run's strong. Tomorrow will give me daylight to go over the fine details. I know she has a small oil leak on the bottom, but suspect it is either the sump drain or the sump plate. Easy fix. AND I HAVE A SPARE ENGINE IN CASE ANYTHING DOWN THERE IS BUGGERED!!!
Yes, there is a severe absence of buyer's remorse here. Did I mention the bike was registered and he was riding it to and from work? He's a old flat tracker so the sale took over 3 hours as he showed me all his racing stuff and pics and we swapped stories about bikes and racing and stuff. He can't race anymore and his rider got run over last weekend and broke his leg in two places, so he's bummed out about the season.
Okay, I'm overtired and babbling. Wine on an empty stomach does that. I have a few requests for those who are still reading.
Does anyone have a diagram for the muffer internals? Or, does anyone have a rusted out muffler they want to send me (I'll pay of course) so I can disect to see how they were built?
Can the shocks be disassembled on the '67 bikes? I rebuilt my '67 S90 shocks. Would like to do the same with these.
Anyone got a set of decent lookin exhaust pipes I can run with snuff or nots or install baffles?
And the journey begins.
Best regards,
Rob
Ain't a wannabe anymore
Since getting the bike, I've cleaned it up a bit, polished a few bits, rebuilt the speedo, re-set the valves (intake way too tight) and put about 50 or so miles on it. Tires are period original and although tread is almost new, front has a couple of splits by the rim so I'm not too keen on riding it in traffic, or anywhere at speed for that matter. By coincidence I had a friend blow a brand new rear on a rigid Sportster last week and it thru him into the opposite lane. Fortunately, no on-coming cars and somehow he never went down. Change of shorts and he was good to go.
Here's a link to some pics now that the bike is cleaned up. http://s176.photobucket.com/albums/w163 ... da%20CL77/ regards, Rob He's a old flat tracker so the sale took over 3 hours as he showed me all his racing stuff and pics and we swapped stories about bikes and racing and stuff. haha ! That's awesome, I had the same type of guy when I took over his CB77. I just could not get away ! (not that I minded!) Awesome stories to tell and many pictures from back in the days... butehh... can't you try to recover the frame from the scrapyard ? Maybe it's still there.
