New CL77 Owner
New CL77 OwnerAll, I acquired a barn fresh CL77 about a month ago. Not sure of the year, though. It has steel fork legs, with a single action drum up front and a double action drum in the rear. Any ideas? The engine and carbs moved freely, and I got it running in short order. I then replaced tires and tubes, chain and sprockets, fuel lines, condenser pack, and a few other bits for reliability. Getting it registered in New Hampshire was a breeze, even without a scrap of paperwork. The total cost, including a vanity plate (MY305) was under $25! I just completed the spring Moto-Giro on it, and it never missed a beat in 250 miles of hard riding on secondary and dirt roads. (www.motogiro-usa.com). I have perused this forums various topics, and I look forward to picking this groups collective brain. Bob B p.s. I am in need of a speedo and in ignition switch. Thanks, Bob B
cl77Bob,
First and foremost, welcome to the forum. It's a fun place and a great place to gain knowledge in these machines. The double action drum in the rear is likely a PO addition. You can find a tag on the wire harness near the ignition switch. That should give you a vague idea of the year of MFG of the harness. Give us a frame number and someone will no doubt tell ya what year of manufacture your bike was built. I can't help you with the Ign. switch but I can help with the speedo. It won't be a show point winner but good for a rider. PM me for details and you may consider listing a want post in the wanted section as well. Congrats on the barn find, it does my heart good to see these things find their way back to the system rather than the parts bin. Keep it up,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,RW
New CL77 Owner; InfoFrame # CL77-1024412
Engine # Cl77E-1011281 FYI: I shod my CL77 with 2 3.50-19 Shinko 241 Trials tires from www.tiresunlimited.com . On the 'Giro, they stuck like glue at some pretty extreme lean angles on the pavement while chasing a bunch of fast riders on Superhawks, 160's, Ducati and BSA 250's, and other small bore Eurotrash(!). Once we hit the dirt sections, some several miles long, I was able to simply run away from the pack, as the tires hooked up well, and were very controllable in slides at 40+. The front fender would not fit over the 3.50, so I fit a temporary plastic fender. I've ordered a 2.75 to replace it. I talked briefly with another CL77 rider; there were 13 305's out of 102 entries, and he talked briefly about his upgraded, higher output charging system. Can anyone shed more light on this? Thanks, Bob B.
chargeBob,
Go to the electrical section and find a post about testing a rectifier by e3steve. There you will find some very interesting reading on the subject of our charging systems. From what I have gathered,go to a halogen headlight, different rectifier, and a LED tail/stop light to gain a bit more voltage for charging. I have not had to address this yet but I may in the future so I can't give you the specs. Just some of the bits I've picked up along the way. RW
Rob,
I found my CL77 on CraigsList. They are out there if ya look around a bit. Will you be at the fall 'Giro? I'm shaking down a 1974 Vespa 150 Super for the fall 'Giro. I got it with a seized engine, and just finished rebuilding it. Vintage Vespas have their own cult following, and it's been a fun project. Regards, Bob B
