I'm Rich!

Post by AdamKosecki » Wed Jun 21, 2006 8:47 pm

Ok, so I cleaned my carbs and the bike starts. It idles now too! Thing is, it's running rich. I can't even start the bike if it's choked. I am trying to mess with the idle adjustment screws, but I have been failing miserably. Is this something I can have *quickly* adjusted at just about any cycle shop?

Did you follow Ed's tuning recipe?

This sounds like the problem I first posted a question on

If the link doesn't work, its under Ignition-mechanical and the topic is spark plug fouling.

Wow, thanks! I did not put new main needles in it, but it is quite possible that the needles in there were replaced at some point. I did, when cleaning the carbs, move the needle notch to Ron Silver's recomendation. It's quite possible that I un-compensated for different needles.

Question: When you say "lowered the needle one notch" I am assuming this means that you actually moved the clip UP one notch, consequently allowing the needle to dive further into the carb. Right?

Question 2: What is the normal jet length? I would like to measure mine tonight!

Where is it? I don't see it anywhere.

You're right about raising the needle one notch in order to make the needle ride lower into the carb jet. I'm not sure of the needle length or that that's the issue. The wonderful sage people that advised me on this indicated that the carb rebuild kits that most of us get for these bikes give you a main jet that's too big. The numbers I've heard are 120 and 130 ( it should be a 120 but they give you a 130). I really don't know what the units are or what they are measuring although I would guess it's the diameter of the hole, but the hole would be around 1.2 millimeters not 120 so I don't know.
Anyway you don't know who's done what to this bike before you got it, that is, where the carb came from or what's been done to it, but you do seem convinced it's running rich, so frankly I wouldn't spend too much time with your vernier calipers measuring hole diameters. I would just lower the needle one notch (mine was in the 3rd position of 5 so I put it on the 2nd postion from the top) and see if the bike runs well.

Let us know how you come out.
