gonna hold my breath

Post by G-GAURD » Thu Jul 29, 2010 10:28 pm

i hear you rusty but as i said it looks like the previous owner just overheated the motor by the way and smell of the oil. i'm going downstairs and gonna mic. the cylinder with some telescoping I.D. gauges and as i said i got a CD with some manuals and they don't even give me torque settings for the head bolts of the 305 but does for the 450 at 25 ft.lbs.

anyway here i go and if there is to much clearence over any +- dimensions then i'm vuying new pistons and taking it to the next level.

thanks for the input it keeps me focused

piston and cylinder

Post by G-GAURD » Fri Jul 30, 2010 1:56 am

ok folks

cylinder I.D. in three places t/m/b is 2.383 +/- .002
piston is 050 on dome O.D. is 2.370 +/- .001

does this fall within acceptable specs to go with a new set of 050 rings or is there gonna be to much play??

let me know

Pete

Pete,
That would be a clearance of 0.013" which seems way too large to me. The odd thing is that the bore is 60.52mm OK and the piston measures 60.2mm which is rather small for 0.5mm oversize.

But the other question is what will the motor be used for. If you want it to be a smooth quiet runner that lasts a lifetime you should replace the pistons. If it's a motor that will get little use, I'd check ring end gaps and if they are OK, go ahead and run it.

clearence .013

Post by G-GAURD » Fri Jul 30, 2010 9:01 am

ok
the measurement is in inch. so wouldn't that be .0065 thousandths per side and i'm gonna be replaceing the rings.
this is an extra motor i got with my 67 ca77 and it was seized so i broke the pistons loose and the cylinder walls look good and so do the pistons so i'm trying to see if a new set of rings will be enough to complete the overhaul cause the budget says i'm so broke i can't be fixed haha. anyway i'm using this engine as a learning platform so when i overhaul my good engine i have a good idea of what i'm doing.

so i'm looking at the options and the money i can spend

but your input is appreciated .

let me know if just rings will give me a descent running engine with the .013 clearence

thanks

Pete

CHECK THE PISTON AT THE WIDEST POINT ON THE SKIRT (PERPENDICULAR TO THE WRIST PIN AND AT THE BOTTOM, NOT THE TOP)

Pete,

To Mark's point, did you measure the pistons at the bottom and front to back - not side to side?

I'd say with your budget and it's a spare motor - try it and see. It won't last forever and it will probably be slightly noisy but what the heck. It won't cost much either and if compression is too low or it's too noisy, you won't have much dead cost in it.
