Acorn caps again!!Acorn caps again!!Hi Dreamers:
Remember me, the guy with the rusty stuck acorn caps on his Dreams. I had decided that the next improvement my bikes needed were to replace those rusty raunchy acorn caps on the top of the engine. This weekend I did just that and when I started the bike I had more oil all over the place than Suadi Arabia. Those things don't just hold the top on, they hold the oil in!!!. Fortunately, I didn't throw anything away, but I tore up two of my 8 caps from 2 bikes. I discovered I could construct a gasket with gasket material and seal it up, but I don't know how reliable it's going to be. So what do the rest of you do when restoring these bikes. Where do you get acorn caps and washers that will substitute for the originals. I got mine from a place that sells metric nuts andd bolts, but the only 8mm acorn caps they had were a little shorter than the originals and apparently the washeres oare critical too. I tore up one washer and lost a second one. That left me with 6 of the 8 nuts and washers I needed for the two bikes. The 6 washers as well as the nuts are functional, but they will never be restored to like new condition. If no one comes up with anything better I guess the resolution to this will be to use a gasket cut from CUT-A GASKET material or to just live with the crappy nuts and washers.
Hi Dreamers:
I spent the weekend putting new Acorn caps on 2 bikes. I used a generic 8mm caps I got from a web site that sells metric nuts and bolts and used washers I got at Kmart. By themselves this would leak oil like crazy. I had an carburetor gasket for a 66 Mustang that I got for a dollar at a flea market and I cut washer sized gaskets out of it. For good measure I also put in this goopy gasket maker you squeeze out of a tube. It works fine and looks fine. I'll probably spend the $40 on the real stuff one day, but for now I'm satisfied and it's on to the next problem. Good luck with your problems.
