Engine Life Expectancy
Engine Life ExpectancyI'm asking this here because the Engine Section is more topic specific.
To keep it simple, what was the Life Expectancy of the 305 engine? For example, I had a 650 Triumph Bonnie engine rebuilt years ago and at that time I was told the valve guides had a 10,000 mile life expectancy before they would need replacing. Or when ever I would look at the Harley "For Sale" ads it seemed it was always "xxxx miles since lower or upper rebuild" not how many miles on the bike. When I bought my Gold Wing back in the '70's I was told that it was a 100k mile engine. So if a 305 engine was maintained as per the owners manual (or maybe I should say had proper maintenance) and driven as per design, would 10,000 miles be considered "Mid Life" or just getting broke in? I'm not asking about 10,000 miles today on a 45 year old engine, I'm saying when it was new how many miles before it was time to start rebuilding? With the roller bearings and all it sure looks like a strong engine. I'm thinking of the old Flat Head auto engines, good grief, they seemed to run for ever..... I had one that had 190k on the clock when it finally gave up a piston (still ran pretty good, just smoked a lot). I did read thru the previous 40+ pages here and did not see a question like this. tnx George
Tnx for the reply. In reading thru the posts in the Engine section on the type of oil to use, someone commented that using the recommended oil of the day (30W ND) the rod bearings and cylinder walls started showing wear by around 14,000 miles. So maybe so maybe your 18k would be considered the Senior life?

I used that oil in my 2 (at different times) CL72 HONDA'S and for I think it was 25 cents a quart, I changed to at apx. 1,500 miles with no problems and as I recall when I sold the 1963 it had close to 30,000 miles with no problems.
I did for sure keep the points and valves adjusted as with the stock sprockets (15/40) it revved high at a steady 65 MPH. .............lm
This is humorous as I am a retired telephone technician/supervisor and have wired phones in the Fontana/Colton, Calif. area for ring 1, ring 2 on 8 party lines.
Long time back. ..................lm
