New Guy Here, Looking to Buy 305 Scrambler

Post by lifewithoutparole » Tue Apr 20, 2010 7:16 pm

Hello to all. Tim in florida here. I have been lurking on the forum and I must say it is detailed and informative. I have a restored 67 S90 and a 66 Suzuki X6 that i am selling so I can have room for a 305 scrambler. I have a question on the 305's. Seems I can find more 64-65 's than later years. Are there any advantages to a later year scrambler or are they basically the same like the S 90's were? Additionally it seems that there are tons of posts on the charging systems and upgrades so I am confused. Since I put a modern rectifier on my S90 it seems to stay charged well even running with the headlight on all the time. Do these bikes need alot of upgrades to be ridden reliably or are the stock systems adequate. Thanks for the help! Tim PS, I have added an attachment with my bikes!

Hey Tim,
Welcome to the forum. As you've stated, there is an abundance of information regarding the models referenced here on the site. As a lay person with respect to Honda knowledge, I fall way short. But what I do know is that short of finding a scrambler running and pretty much intact, you'll go through your life savings if you have to buy fenders, side covers, tank or most anything on/in the motor (cases, heads, exhaust pipes ect.) I may be wrong, but most OEM items are very hard to come by. Plenty of small stuff from various vendors, but big ticket items are tough. Yeah, I forgot to mention the headlamp bucket..$$$ChaChing....! if you can find one. Sometimes you get lucky though. But hey...keep your eye open on this sites classified, or post your wanted add, but hold on to those two bikes you have for the time being. That Suzuki is sharp! As far as add ons, I've been running my scrambler stock since I've had it, and I ain't had no trouble yet, although there are good arguments on both sides of the upgrade question i.e. rectifiers and e-ignition.
Best Regards,
Mike

305 for sale

Post by RonF305 » Wed Apr 21, 2010 7:05 am

Hey Tim, welcome. Nice bikes you have. My first bike, in 1967, was a Suzuki 80. My 2nd bike, a few years later, was a Honda S90 (used) but it never looked as good as yours. Then I had a 305 Dream. Many years passed and now I have a 305 Scrambler and a 2006 Shadow. I'm selling the Scrambler due to lack of garagae space and the fact that I ride the Shadow all the time. I love the Scrambler. In my opinion, and others, it is one of the best bikes ever made. Mine is in great shape and runs fantastic. It is a 1967, the last year of production and the only year with chrome fenders, I believe. You can check it out on EBay (item #170475583930). I just listed it yesterday, for one week. You can bid on it there or if it doesn't sell in that week, email me here and we'll see if we can work something out.

Scrambler

Thanks Mike and Ron for the replies. I intend to get one in excellant shape and know I will pay for it. I restored the S90 9 years ago and it was tough finding OEM parts for it even then so I have been through the restoration process and have come to the conclusion that it is more efficeint to buy one that is already restored. I am going to check out rons bike on ebay. Thanks again. Tim

Florida to New Mexico... WOW. Sweeet looking bike there Ron. Got that muffler tip thing and winkers....nice. Curious to know the asking price, or should I say, the least you'd take for it. Let us know what happens Tim.

Nice looking bike and in my opinion has several parts flaws to keep it from being a be a HIGH DOLLAR restore.
Just my feelings. .......lm

OK Ed, you got me lookin' close. I'm no expert, but I see the aircleaner issue, the seat, and no seat trim. What else ya got? I'm curious thats all, and I DO respect you opinion.
